Carnival Cruise Line is undertaking a significant overhaul of its longstanding Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) loyalty program, aiming to modernize and enhance the experience for its frequent cruisers. This initiative comes in response to growing feedback from loyal passengers who have expressed dissatisfaction with outdated rewards

 

One of the most notable changes is the shift from a cruise-length-based point system to a spend-based model. This new structure rewards passengers based on their onboard expenditures, aligning with industry trends and incentivizing higher spending during cruises. While specific details of the revamped program have yet to be disclosed, this move is expected to provide more substantial benefits to those who invest more in their cruise experiences .

 

In addition to the structural changes, Carnival has made several adjustments to existing perks. For instance, the complimentary drink benefit for Gold, Platinum, and Diamond members has been made more flexible. Previously restricted to specific times and venues, members can now redeem their free drinks at any bar and at any time during their cruise . This enhancement aims to provide greater convenience and satisfaction to loyal guests.

 

However, not all changes have been well-received. The recent replacement of the VIFP loyalty gift from a baseball cap to packing cubes sparked mixed reactions among Platinum and Diamond members. While some appreciated the practical nature of the new gift, others felt it lacked the exclusivity and value expected at higher loyalty tiers .

 

Moreover, Carnival has quietly discontinued certain benefits without prior notice. The $25 FunPlay casino credit for Diamond and Platinum members has been removed, leading to disappointment among frequent cruisers who valued this perk . Additionally, the one-time $100 donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for Diamond-level members has been stopped due to management challenges, although the company continues its broader fundraising efforts for the charity .

 

These changes coincide with Carnival’s strategic decision to absorb P&O Cruises Australia into its operations by March 2025. This move aims to streamline the company’s brand portfolio and enhance operational efficiencies. As part of this integration, P&O Cruises Australia guests will be incorporated into Carnival’s loyalty programs, providing them with access to the updated VIFP benefits .

 

While the overhaul of the VIFP program reflects Carnival’s efforts to modernize and align with industry standards, it also highlights the challenges of balancing cost management with customer satisfaction.
